Event Details
All courses are hands-on and taught by Stephen McDaniel, co-author of "Rapid Graphs with Tableau 6", "The Accidental Analyst" and "SAS for Dummies". Freakalytics is a Premier Certified Tableau Education Partner and Stephen is also an instructor for the American Marketing Association and The Data Warehouse Institute (TDWI). Stephen has taught full-day classes at Tableau's worldwide and European conferences and is widely recognized as a world expert at visual analytics and dashboard design. Stephen has presented at many universities including The University of California at Berkeley, The University of Washington- Seattle and North Carolina State University.
The courses have been developed in conjunction with Doctor Eileen McDaniel, Ph.D. Eileen is Managing Partner of Freakalytics and co-author of many scientific papers and "The Accidental Analyst" (recently sponsored by Tableau at their worldwide conference) and "Rapid Dashboard Reference Card". Eileen has won teaching awards from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a National Scientific Research award from the US Congress.
Rapid Graphs and Data Analysis with Tableau (Days 1 and 2)
Gain confidence and expertise in this two-day course as you learn how to create graphs and tables with Tableau to improve the speed and quality of your daily decisions. Topics include core features, the power of Show Me!, data access, thinking analytically, effective business graph design, data management, data exploration principles, table calculations, filtering and the value of highlighting with multi-graph views. Each day concludes with a hands-on case study to further reenforce key learnings.
Each attendee will receive three books, “Rapid Graphs with Tableau Software” by Stephen McDaniel, “Show Me the Numbers: Designing Tables and Graphs to Enlighten” by Stephen Few and “Now You See It: Simple Visualization Techniques for Quantitative Analysis” by Stephen Few.
Dashboard Design and Advanced Mapping with Tableau (Day 3)
This one day course covers dashboard capbilities with two case studies, dashboard design principles, advanced mapping capabilities and publishing to Tableau Server. Dashboard topics include design principles and best practices, common mistakes, layout, interaction features and testing. Mapping topics include custom geocoding and best practices for combining maps with other view types in Tableau.
Prerequisite- if you don't attend the first two days of our Tableau training then you should possess knowledge of Tableau commensurate with the book “Rapid Graphs with Tableau Software”.
Advanced Data Preparation and Management for Tableau (Day 4)
A good understanding of data preparation and data management are key to efficiently achieving great results in Tableau. Topics covered in this one day course include Excel data preparation, data joins and unions, custom SQL, Access, advanced data item calculations, table calculations and general data management within Tableau.
Prerequisite- if you don't attend the first two days of our Tableau training then you should possess knowledge of Tableau commensurate with the book “Rapid Graphs with Tableau Software”.
Additional Course Information
- All courses are a combination of lecture, questions and answers and hands-on use of Tableau.
- In order to participate in the hands-on portion of the class, each attendee must bring their own laptop with Tableau 6.1 already installed and be able to open both the sample data sources that come with the software.
- If you don't already have a Tableau license, there is a 14-day trial period license available at http://www.freakalytics.com/2010/08/10/download-links-for-tableau-software/. There are no loaner/rental laptops or PC's available from Freakalytics during the course. Tables, work areas and power strips for your laptop will be provided in the class. The instructor is unable to provide installation assistance or installation problem resolution during class to ensure that class time is spent on instruction for all attendees.
